Wellness Fitness Initiative

Since 1997, the Wellness-Fitness Initiative (WFI) has been the most comprehensive resource guiding wellness policy and practice across the fire service. The IAFF, in partnership with the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), is currently updating the WFI through a FEMA-funded grant. The new edition, rebranded Igniting Change, will serve as a roadmap for departments to build and implement wellness programs that support Fire Fighters' physical, psychological, and social health.

The WFI Framework

Defining Wellness

Guidelines that help departments assess Fire Fighter well-being and identify clear, measurable outcomes to work toward.

Pursuing Wellness

Programs built to actively influence the behaviors that drive Fire Fighter well-being.

Supporting Wellness

Policies that reinforce the behaviors and outcomes those wellness programs are designed to achieve.

Restoring Wellness

Practices aimed at helping Fire Fighters recover and rebuild well-being after it's been affected.

Promoting Wellness

Strategies for implementing and sustaining wellness programs across a department.
